Punctuality may seem like a small matter, but in the life of a believer, it carries significant weight. Our approach to time reflects our values and priorities, and ultimately, how we honour God and show love and respect for others. Punctuality also reflects key aspects of God’s character, which we are called to emulate in our own lives.
1. God’s faithfulness
God is always faithful and keeps His promises at the right time. Throughout Scripture, we see God's timing in Scripture is portrayed as impeccable. He is never too early, never too late. For example, Galatians 4:4 says, “But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son...” This indicates that Jesus' arrival was perfectly timed according to God's plan. This notion of “set time” underscores the belief that God operates on a divine schedule, ensuring everything unfolds as intended.
This attribute of God’s faithfulness can serve as a model for us. By being punctual and reliable, we emulate God's faithfulness in our own lives. When we honour our commitments and manage our time effectively, we reflect God's dependable nature, thus aligning our behaviour with His character.
2. God’s orderliness
Our God embodies order rather than chaos. This concept is supported by 1 Corinthians 14:33, which says, "For God is not a God of disorder but of peace." This verse highlights that God's nature is characterised by organisation and harmony, not confusion or disarray.
When we strive for punctuality and maintain a sense of order in our own lives, we align ourselves with this divine characteristic. Punctuality and organisation demonstrate that we value and honour the structure and order that God has instituted in the world. By participating in this orderliness, we reflect the divine order established by God and show respect for the principles that govern our lives and the world around us.
3. God’s respect for time
Time is a creation of God, and He has a purpose for everything under heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1 articulates this concept: “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” This verse reflects the belief that God has a deliberate plan and schedule for every aspect of life, highlighting the importance and value He places on time.
When we are punctual and manage our time well, we acknowledge that time is a precious gift from God. It shows that we recognise its importance and are committed to using it wisely, aligning our actions with the value God places on time. Being timely reflects an understanding that our time, like all of creation, has a purpose and should be stewarded responsibly.
In addition to reflecting God’s character, punctuality also honours Him in other ways:
1. Respect for others
When we are late, it can convey a lack of respect for others’ time. God commands us to love our neighbours as ourselves (Mark 12:31). Part of that love is shown in valuing the time of those around us. Consistently being late can suggest that we don't value their time, which can undermine relationships and the unity God desires in our community.
2. Stewardship of time
God has entrusted us with the gift of time, and we are called to manage it wisely (Ephesians 5:15-16). When we are consistently late, it may reflect poor stewardship of this gift. Properly managing our time allows us to fulfil our responsibilities effectively and serve God and others better.
3. Reverence in worship
In the context of worship, arriving late can disrupt the focus and atmosphere. Worship is a sacred time set apart for God, and punctuality shows our reverence and priority for this time with Him. Hebrews 10:25 reminds us of the importance of gathering to encourage one another; being on time shows respect for God and the community of believers.
4. Our witness
As followers of Christ, our actions serve as a testimony for others. Habitual lateness can undermine our witness and credibility. Colossians 3:17 calls us to do everything in the name of the Lord, giving thanks to God. By being punctual, we demonstrate a commitment to excellence and integrity, reflecting the character of the God we serve.
While occasional lateness is understandable due to unforeseen circumstances, consistent tardiness without good reason can dishonour God by showing a lack of respect for others, poor stewardship of time, disruption of worship, and a diminished witness. As image bearers of our God, let us show His attributes through our punctuality. Let us strive to honour our God in all areas of our lives, including how we manage our time and commitments. May God be magnified and glorified in all that we say and do.
